detrimental reliance – (1941) Reliance by one party on the acts or representations of another, causing a worsening of the first party’s position. * Detrimental reliance may serve as a substitute for consideration and thus make a promise enforceable as a contract.
essential reliance – (1936) Contracts. Reliance that causes a person to expect specified benefits and to perform as instructed by the contract.
incidental reliance – (1936) Contracts. Reliance that motivates a person to act in ways that are not necessary to perform a contract but that follow from the contract.
