Kentucky<\/em>, 476 U.S. 79, 106 S.Ct. 1712 (1986)<\/a>, a criminal case in which the prosecution struck potential jurors on the basis of race.\u00a0 The principle of <em>Batson<\/em> was extended in\u00a0<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">later Supreme Court cases to civil litigants (<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Edmonson v. Leesville Concrete Co<\/em>., 500 U.S. 614, 111 S.Ct. 2077 (1991)<\/span>) and to criminal-defense attorneys (<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Georgia v. McCollum<\/em>, 505 U.S. 42, 112 S. Ct. 2348 (1992)<\/span>).\u00a0 The Court also applied it\u00a0<\/span>to peremptory challenges based on a juror\u2019s sex (<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>I.E.B. v.
