Indian allotment<\/span>:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

1. A conveyance of land by the United States to an individual Indian<\/a>, usually the head of a family, made in pursuance of a policy adopted in reference to the Indians. 27 Am J1st Indians \u00a7 27<\/span>. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

2. A term also applied to any allotment of land to Indians<\/a>, the title<\/a> of which is held in trust<\/a> by the United States or which remains inalienable without the consent of the United States.\u00a0\u00a027 Am J1st Indians \u00a7 45<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>[1]<\/span><\/p>\n

Indian country<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 all land within the borders of any\u00a0Indian reservation<\/a>\u00a0together with the land occupied by any Indian community not on a reservation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Indian land<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 land owned by the United States but held in trust for & used by the American Indians.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Tribal Land<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 any part of an Indian reservation not allotted to or occupied by individual Indians but instead held in common by tribal members.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Indian title<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a right of occupancy, constituting possession rather than ownership, that the federal government grants to an American Indian tribe based on the tribe\u2019s immemorial possession of the area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>aka\u00a0aboriginal title<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Indian Reservation<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u2013 an area that the federal government has designated for use by an American Indian tribe, where the tribe generally settles & establishes a tribal government.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Indian law<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 the body of law dealing with American Indian tribes and their relationships to federal & state governments, private citizens, & each other.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Tribal Court<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 a quasi-independent court composed of tribal members, usually situated on a reservation, varying in procedure according to local custom.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Tribal-Exhaustion Doctrine<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 the general principle that when an Indian tribal court has jurisdiction, the parties must pursue all remedies available under tribal law before turning to non-tribal courts.\u00a0<\/strong>[2]<\/span><\/p>\n
