plaintiff<\/a><\/span> \u2013 a party who brings a civil suit in a court of law.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

complainant<\/a><\/span> \u2013 a person who files a formal accusation of a crime or a plaintiff in a civil suit (court of equity).<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

petitioner<\/a><\/span> \u2013 a party who presents a petition to a court or other official body, especially\u00a0when seeking relief.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

prosecutor<\/a><\/span> – an attorney who represents the state or federal government in criminal prosecution, or a private person who carries on a criminal or civil action. <\/span><\/strong>\u2014 aka public (or private, depending) prosecutor<\/em><\/span>; state’s attorney<\/em><\/span><\/strong>; public commissioner<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

appellant<\/a><\/span> \u2013 a party who appeals a lower court\u2019s decision, usually seeking reversal of\u00a0that decision.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

defendant<\/a><\/span> – a person sued in a civil proceeding or accused in a criminal proceeding.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

respondant<\/a><\/span> – the party against whom an appeal is taken to a higher court; the appellee<\/a> or the defendant<\/a> in a suit in equity.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

third-party defendant<\/span><\/a> – a party brought into a lawsuit by the original defendant.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

appellee<\/a><\/span> – a party against whom an appeal is taken from a lower court to a higher court & whose role is to respond to that appeal.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
