These rules apply to proceedings in United States courts. The specific courts and proceedings to which the rules apply, along with exceptions, are set out in <a title=\"Rule 1101 \u2013 Applicability of the Rules\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rulesofevidence.org\/article-xi\/rule-1101\/\">Rule 1101<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>(b) <strong>Definitions<\/strong>. In these rules:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(1) \u201ccivil case\u201d means a civil action or proceeding;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(2) \u201ccriminal case\u201d includes a criminal proceeding;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(3) \u201cpublic office\u201d includes a public agency;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(4) \u201crecord\u201d includes a memorandum, report, or data compilation;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(5) a \u201crule prescribed by the Supreme Court\u201d means a rule adopted by the Supreme Court under statutory authority; and<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(6) a reference to any kind of written material or any other medium includes electronically stored information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(a) Scope.
