font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(a)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Redacted Filings<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">.<\/span> <em>Unless<\/em> the court orders otherwise, in an electronic or paper filing with the court that contains an individual\u2019s social-security number, taxpayer-identification number, or birth date, the name of an individual known to be a minor, or a financial-account number, a party or nonparty making the filing may include <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">only<\/span><\/em>:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (1) the <em>last four digits<\/em> of the social-security number and taxpayer- identification number;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (2) the year of the individual\u2019s birth;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (3) the minor\u2019s initials; and<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (4) the <em>last four digits<\/em> of the financial-account number.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (b)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Exemptions from the Redaction Requirement<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">.<\/span> The redaction requirement does <em>not<\/em> apply to the following:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (1) a financial-account number that identifies the <em>property allegedly subject to forfeiture<\/em> in a forfeiture proceeding;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (2) the record of an <em>administrative or agency<\/em> proceeding;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (3) the official record of a <em>state-court<\/em> proceeding;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (4) the record of <em>a court or tribunal<\/em>, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">if that record was <em>not<\/em> subject to the redaction requirement when originally filed<\/span>;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (5) a filing covered by <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Rule 5.2(c) or (d)<\/span>; and<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (6) a\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>pro se<\/i><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0filing in an action brought under\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #990000;\">28 U.S.C. \u00a7\u00a72241<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #990000;\">2254<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, or\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #990000;\">2255<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (c)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Limitations on Remote Access to Electronic Files; Social-Security Appeals and Immigration Cases<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">.<\/span> Unless the court orders otherwise, in an action for benefits under the Social Security Act, <em>and<\/em> in an action or proceeding relating to an order of removal, to relief from removal, or to immigration benefits or detention, access to an electronic file is <em>authorized<\/em> as follows:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (1) the parties and their attorneys may have remote electronic access to any part of the case file, <em>including<\/em> the administrative record;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (2) any other person may have electronic access to the full record at the courthouse, but may have remote electronic access <em>only<\/em> to:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (A) the docket maintained by the court; and<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (B) an opinion, order, judgment, or other disposition of the court, but <em>not<\/em> any other part of the case file or the administrative record.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (d)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Filings Made Under Seal<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">.<\/span> The court may order that a filing be made under seal <em>without<\/em> redaction. The court may later <em>unseal the filing<\/em> or order the person who made the filing to file a redacted version for the public record.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (e)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Protective Orders<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">.<\/span> For good cause, the court may by order in a case:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (1) require <em>redaction<\/em> of additional information; or<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (2) <em>limit or prohibit<\/em> a nonparty\u2019s remote electronic access to a document filed with the court.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (f)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Option for Additional Unredacted Filing Under Seal<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">.<\/span> A person making a redacted filing may also file an unredacted copy under seal. The court must retain the unredacted copy as part of the record.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (g)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Option for Filing a Reference List<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">.<\/span> A filing that contains redacted information may be filed together with a reference list that identifies each item of redacted information and specifies an appropriate identifier that uniquely corresponds to each item listed. The list must be filed under seal and may be amended as of right. Any reference in the case to a listed identifier will be construed to refer to the corresponding item of information.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (h)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Waiver of Protection of Identifiers<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. A person waives the protection of <\/span><span style=\"color: #990000;\">Rule 5.2(a)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> as to the person\u2019s own information by filing it without redaction and not under seal.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(a)\u00a0Redacted Filings.
