These orders flow from the court&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Injunction\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Injunction\">injunction power<\/a>\u00a0to grant equitable remedies. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A party that refuses to comply with an order faces criminal or civil penalties &amp;\u00a0may have to pay damages or accept sanctions<\/span>. Restraining orders are\u00a0most commonly used in reference to\u00a0<a title=\"Domestic violence\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domestic_violence\">domestic violence<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Harassment\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harassment\">harassment<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Stalking\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stalking\">stalking<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a title=\"Sexual assault\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sexual_assault\">sexual assault<\/a>. In the\u00a0<a title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">United States<\/a>, every state has some form of domestic violence restraining order law,\u00a0&amp; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>many states also have specific restraining order laws for stalking\u00a0&amp; sexual assault.<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5>\u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">After a Restraining Order has been<\/span> filed by the victim &amp; been <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">officially ordered by The Court<\/span>&#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">if the abuser does something that the court has ordered him or her not to do, or refuses to do something the court has ordered him or her to do,<\/span> that is a violation of the order. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The victim can ask the police or the court- <em>or both-<\/em> depending on the violation, to enforce the order.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5>\u00a0 \u00a0All protective order statutes permit the court to instruct the abuser to stay a certain distance away from someone, their home, their workplace or their school (&#8220;stay away&#8221; provisions) and to not contact them (no one really knows what the law&#8217;s stance if the abuser stays in one place and the victim moves into the area). Victims generally may also ask the court to order that all contact, whether it be by telephone, notes, mail, fax, email or delivery of flowers or gifts, be prohibited (&#8220;no contact&#8221; provisions). Courts can also instruct the abuser to not hurt or threaten someone (&#8220;cease abuse&#8221; provisions).<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Restraining orders may also be enforced across state lines<\/span>, in accordance with the\u00a0<a title=\"Full Faith and Credit Clause\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Full_Faith_and_Credit_Clause\">Full Faith and Credit Clause<\/a>\u00a0of the U.S. Constitution\u00a0via the\u00a0<a title=\"National Crime Information Center\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Crime_Information_Center\">National Crime Information Center<\/a>(NCIC) database.\u00a0 Some states (for example, Mississippi) may also call a restraining order a\u00a0<a title=\"Peace bond\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peace_bond\">peace bond<\/a>. Minnesota law provides for an Order for Protection (OFP) &amp;\u00a0a Harassment Restraining Order (HRO).<\/h5>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Regarding Children<\/h4>\n<h5>\u00a0 \u00a0Many jurisdictions also allow the court to make decisions about the care and safety of any children. \u00a0Courts can order the abuser to stay away from &amp;\u00a0have no contact with the children&#8217;s doctors, daycare, school or after-school job. \u00a0Most courts can make temporary\u00a0<a title=\"Child custody\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Child_custody\">child custody<\/a>\u00a0decisions.
