1. Dependence or trust by a person, esp.\u00a0 when combined with action based on that dependence, or trust. \u2014 <\/strong>rely<\/em>, vb,<\/span><\/p>\n

detrimental reliance<\/span> –<\/span> <\/strong>(1941) Reliance by one party on the acts or representations of another, causing a worsening of the first party’s position.\u00a0 *\u00a0 Detrimental reliance may serve as a substitute for consideration and thus make a promise enforceable as a contract. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

essential reliance<\/span> –<\/span><\/strong> (1936) Contracts<\/em>. Reliance that causes a person to expect specified benefits and to perform as instructed by the contract.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

incidental reliance<\/span> –<\/span> <\/strong>(1936) Contracts<\/em>. Reliance that motivates a person to act in ways that are not necessary to perform a contract but that follow from the contract.
