1. Rage, terror, or furious hatred suddenly aroused by some immediate provocation, usually another person\u2019s words or actions.\u00a0 *\u00a0 At common law, heat of passion could serve as a mitigating circumstance to reduce a murder<\/a> charge to manslaughter<\/a> if the provocation was objectively adequate, if there was inadequate time to cool off, and if the provocation and passion were causally linked to the homicide<\/a>.<\/strong> \u2014 aka sudden heat of passion<\/strong><\/em><\/span>; sudden heat<\/span><\/strong><\/em>; sudde<\/strong><\/em><\/span>n passion<\/strong><\/em><\/span>; hot blood<\/span><\/strong><\/em>; sudden heat and passion<\/span><\/strong><\/em>; furor brevis<\/span><\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 See adequate provocation<\/em> under PROVOCATION. The expression for a mental state on the part of the accused reducing the offense of the killing of a person from murder<\/a> to manslaughter<\/a>; heat in the sense of an emotional state, produced by an adequate or reasonable provocation and before a reasonable time has elapsed for the blood to cool and reason to assume its habitual control.
