court rules<\/span><\/a> – regulations having the force of law and governing<\/span> practice<\/a> and <\/span>procedure<\/a> in the various courts.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

ordinance<\/span><\/a> – an authoritative law or decree; specifically, a municipal regulation, especially one that forbids or restricts an activity.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

statute<\/span><\/a> – a legislation (aka act or law) enacted by any lawmaking body, such as a legislature, administrative board, or municipal court.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Varying Degrees of Crimes:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

felony<\/a><\/span> – a serious crime usually punishable by imprisonment for more than one year or by death. <\/span>(i.e.<\/span> burglary<\/a>, arson, rape, murder,<\/span> treason<\/a>, robbery<\/a>, larceny<\/a>)<\/span><\/em>. <\/span><\/strong>\u2014 aka major crime<\/em><\/strong><\/span>; serious crime<\/em><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

misdemeanor<\/a><\/span> – a crime less serious than a felony, usually punishable by fine, penalty, forfeiture, or confinement (usually a brief term) in jail (rather than prison).<\/span><\/strong> \u2014 aka minor crime<\/strong><\/em><\/span>; summary offense<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

infraction<\/a><\/span> – a violation, usually of a rule, regulation, or local ordinance, not punishable by incarceration.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
