An officer appointed by a court of equity to assist the court. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2. <\/span><\/strong><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">English law.<\/span><\/em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> (usually capitalized) A senior official or clerk of a <a href=\"https:\/\/reunitethestates.org\/?page_id=12532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">court of chancery<\/a> who assists the Chancellor in various duties such as inquiring into matters referred by the court, examining cases, taking oaths and affidavits, hearing testimony, and computing damages.\u00a0 *\u00a0 There were many Masters in Chancery at the same time. The office was abolished in 1897 and was <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>replaced by the office of <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Ma<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"text_exposed_show\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>ster of the Supreme Court<\/strong><\/span>. \u2014 aka <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em><strong>master of the Chancery<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>1. An officer of the court.\u00a0 A referee in a suit in equity.\u00a0 An assistant of the chancellor having the function of performing acts, either judicial or ministerial in nature, which the chancellor may see fit, in accordance with equity practice, to require of him.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800000;\">27 Am J1st Ship \u00a7 113<\/span>.<\/strong> [2]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>1. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/reunitethestates.org\/?page_id=12532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">court of chancery<\/a>, an officer of the court who assists the judge and performs such judicial duties (EXAMPLE: taking testimony) and ministerial duties (EXAMPLE: administering oaths) as the judge assigns.\u00a0 Many of the duties of a master in chancery are similar to those of a court commissioner or referee.<\/strong> <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 See <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong><em>master&#8217;s report<\/em><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Excerpt from Emory Washburn&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.hathitrust.org\/Record\/010440165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Lectures on the Study and Practice of the Law<\/em><\/a> (1874):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\">[l]t seems proper to notice one class of [officers of the courts of equity], as they constitute one of the means by \u2018which such courts take testimony and settle facts in questions which come before them; and that is Masters in Chancery.\u00a0 When such courts feel themselves incompetent to grant relief without some preliminary information, a reference of the matters is made to a master, who has power to procure such information for the purpose of satisfying the conscience of the court. To this end, he is authorized to examine witnesses or the parties themselves; and, after a hearing upon the matters referred to him, he reports the results at which he arrives to the court.<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> [4]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Master of the Supreme Court<\/span>:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>English law<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>1.
